SUPPORT THE CITY YOU LOVE
Shop & Dine in the 49 is San Francisco’s citywide campaign to raise the visibility and importance of buying local. Shop and Dine in the 49 has successfully organized dozens of events in the past to promote and celebrate our restaurants, makers, retailers, and other small, local businesses that are the backbone of our economy.
This year, Shop and Dine in the 49 is part of the We Will Recover campaign, an effort to promote individual actions that San Franciscans can take to support the City’s recovery from COVID-19. The decisions that people make matter and We Will Recover focuses on three ways San Franciscans can support their City to emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever including how to celebrate safely over the holidays, options for volunteering and philanthropy, and how to support local restaurants and businesses.
The Shop & Dine campaign has been successful in the past because of all of you – the residents and visitors of San Francisco who direct their shopping to local stores and restaurants, and experience the gems in our City’s diverse neighborhoods. Now more than ever, we need to come together and support our small businesses by buying local. If residents redirect just 10 percent of their spending from chains to local businesses, it will generate $192 million in additional economic activity in San Francisco and almost 1,300 new jobs.
As we approach the holidays, we are relaunching Shop and Dine in the 49 into a year-round effort and we’ll be partnering with merchants and neighborhood organizations to host events where you can shop, dine and explore. We’ll also be highlighting treasured local businesses where you can do your holiday shopping and dining, including restaurants serving Thanksgiving meals, local grocery stores, beloved bakers, toy and gift shops, local breweries and bars selling or delivering cocktails to-go, unique retail boutiques and more.
This year, your decisions matter. Stay local, Shop local, Give local.
Follow us @shopdine49 on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to hear the latest updates. We want you to be a part of this campaign. If you’re a San Francisco small business, use hashtag #shopdine49 for a chance to be featured and promoted. If you want to support your favorite neighborhood business, comment on our posts and let us know which business you want to see featured.

SHARED SPACES
Shared Spaces is a multi-agency program of San Francisco’s Economic Recovery Task Force that allows businesses and community groups to use sidewalks, streets, and nearby public spaces like parks, parking lots and plazas, for restaurant pick-up and other neighborhood retail activities.
So far, over 1,300 free Shared Spaces permits have been issued throughout San Francisco to help businesses move outdoors. You can view an interactive map to see all the proposed and approved locations. To learn more or apply for a free permit, go to sf.gov/sharedspaces.

The creativity and determination of San Francisco’s small businesses are on full display with Shared Spaces, as sidewalks and streets have been transformed into vibrant outdoor dining and shopping spaces. By shopping and dining in your neighborhood (including ordering takeout and delivery), you can give thanks to our resilient business owners and workers who are doing all they can to serve our communities safely during this challenging time. A simple thank you and a small purchase can go a long way!
